Mrs. Dziuk, What do you remember most about Hobson during your childhood?

Well the thing I remember most was go swimming with our friends right after school.  We used to go down to the San Antonio River right after school and jump off of our rope swing and go swimming.  We also used to go swimming after all our chores were down.  When I was a teenager they have just built St. Boniface Catholic Church and a community hall.  Since the community hall was built people would throw parties and hold dances in there and those were always fun.

What businesses were open back then that aren’t open now?

Well I can’t remember all the businesses but I can remember that the old gas station burned down about 30 years ago.  When Dr. Simon was alive he built and owned the first and only hospital ever built in Hobson that was later turned into the school.  One of the most powerful men in Hobson was R.J. Polasek.  He built and owned the first businesses in Hobson such as a post office, a general store, a cotton gin, lumberyard, and gristmill.  All of these have been shut down but I believe the buildings are still standing.

What was your day like back then?

Well Hobson wasn’t bad to live in, but no one liked to work out in the fields or in the house.  I remember having to wake up early in the morning to pick the fresh vegetables and then wash the clothes.  I would then attend school, if my father allowed me because he sometimes needed me on the farm, and then I would come home and have to put the clothes up.  After that I would clean the house and cook dinner.  Then at the end of the day I would clean the table, I would take a shower, and then finally hit the sack.

What, if any, inventions or technology helped or effected your life?

Well the day my dad got our first tractor was the day I could have cried.  Since my dad got the tractor he would do 10 times more work than ever.  You may think that it would make life easier but trust me it didn’t.  We still had to do the major physical work and then do the other work that would be involved with the tractor.  I do admit it did make some really hard work easier.  Then when we got a television, which made my life more fun.  Ever Sunday night I would sit down and watch a movie or some of the shows.  My father even sometimes watched television which was easier for me because, no dad outside working no work for me.

Is there anything else you want to tell me about Hobson at that time?

Well there aren’t to many things special about Hobson it is just a small little town.  One major event that my parents tell me about was when Capt. Richmond Pearson Hobson visited our town.  My mother had a picture of Hobson and her but I can’t seem to find it.  Well at that time our town was named Castine but shortly after the town was renamed after Capt. Hobson.  I also wished that Hobson would have boomed after the visit and I wanted the town to become a big city.  I wanted to have a big city so we could be closer to stores so we would have to drive or ride a long ways for supplies and it would also bring many more people that I could meet.
