until the arrival of the railroads in the mid-1880s. Improved access to
markets and numbers of new settlers gradually brought the beginnings of the
diversified farming economy, which has been the staple of the town's economy
since the early 1900s. With the
railroads and all the industry that was evolving came more people, making a
bigger population. The growth
of farming brought with it the rise of tenant farming. Most farmers and ranchers owned their own
land, but in later years, most were worked by tenants. Many crops were grown but some of the main
ones included cotton, peanuts, peas, broom corn, onions, small grains, guar,
and winter legumes. Most income,
however, was from ranching. Much of the
town’s agricultural receipts came from livestock and livestock products,
which principally consisted of cattle and hogs. With
Hobson’s current population of approximately 113 people, it continues to be
one of the smallest communities around.
And thanks to Richmond Pearson Hobson, the small town of Hobson, Texas
still exists with many kinds of people living there throughout their lives. |
